Ingredients
For the Beef Marinade
500 g thinly sliced beef
1 tbsp dark soy sauce
2 tbsp hoisin sauce
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp baking soda
2 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp oil
For the Stir Fry
6 cloves garlic, minced
Splash of soy sauce
Splash of hoisin sauce
1 white onion, sliced
6 stalks green onion, cut into 2 inch pieces
½ bell pepper, sliced
1 tsp sesame seeds
Splash of rice wine vinegar
Splash of sesame oil
Method
In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with dark soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, baking soda, and cornstarch. Mix well until the beef is evenly coated. Let it marinate for about 10 minutes while you prepare the vegetables.
Add oil to a large pan or wok and heat it over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until browned and almost cooked through.Â
In the same pan, add the minced garlic, splash of soy sauce and hoisin sauce. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the sliced white onion, white part of the green onion and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp.
Add sliced bell peppers, sesame seeds, a splash of rice wine vinegar and a drizzle of sesame oil. Stir and garnish with green part of the green onions.
Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
Cooking Tip
The baking soda helps tenderize the beef, giving it that soft, restaurant-style texture often found in stir fries.
